A private house built for two, rooted in Bali

Juli's House occupies a singular position in the Balinese landscape — positioned at coordinates that place it amid the layered greens of southern Bali, at an elevation where morning air carries the scent of frangipani and distant rice paddies. The architecture draws from local building tradition: open-plan volumes that allow cross-ventilation without the need for constant air conditioning, natural stone surfaces that retain a welcome coolness through the afternoon heat, and teak joinery fitted by craftspeople from the surrounding villages. Light shifts across the interior from golden at dawn to a diffused amber by late afternoon.

Galih-test

The house is scaled deliberately for two guests. This is not a scaled-down version of something larger — it was conceived from the beginning as a space where two people can move without compromise. The bedroom is generous, the outdoor areas private, and every surface chosen with the understanding that restraint in a tropical setting is its own kind of luxury. There are no unnecessary objects, no decorative clutter. What remains is the quality of the light, the sound of the garden, and the warmth of terracotta underfoot.

The surrounding neighbourhood sits within reach of Bali's most visited cultural and coastal landmarks while retaining a residential character that is rarely encountered by visitors who stay only in the resort corridors. Local warungs operate within walking distance. The nearest beach is accessible in minutes by scooter. The cultural town of Ubud lies to the north, while the surf beaches of Seminyak and Canggu are reachable within half an hour by car.

Juli manages the property personally. Arrivals are met with orientation, local recommendations, and the kind of attentiveness that comes from genuine investment in the guest experience rather than a managed checklist. Stays here are quiet, unhurried, and genuinely removed from the pace of tourist Bali — a quality that guests return to find again.

How a day unfolds at Juli's House

You arrive in the late afternoon, when the light in Bali turns from white to gold and the temperature drops just enough to make the air comfortable. Juli or a member of her team is there to walk you through the house — not a long briefing, but a thoughtful introduction to where things are, how the outdoor shower works, and which warung at the end of the lane does the best nasi campur. The house settles around you quickly. By the time you have unpacked, it already feels familiar.

Mornings begin with birdsong before anything else. The bedroom faces east, and the first light arrives early and soft. There is a kitchen stocked with the essentials — locally sourced coffee, fresh fruit from the market — so the first hour of the day passes at your own pace, without needing to go anywhere. The outdoor terrace is where most guests take breakfast, with the garden ahead and the sounds of the neighbourhood just audible beyond the walls.

Afternoons in Bali are best spent moving. A scooter hired from nearby gives you access to the coast in under twenty minutes: the black sand beaches of the west coast, the ceremony-filled temples of Tanah Lot, the clifftop walks above the Indian Ocean. You return to the house by late afternoon, when the stone floors have cooled and the overhead fan is the only sound you need.

Evenings at Juli's House are unhurried. The outdoor space comes into its own after dark — Bali nights are warm, well-starred, and quiet in this part of the island. Dinner is a short walk or ride to any number of local restaurants, and the return home to a house that is entirely, privately yours is something guests consistently describe as the best part of the stay.
